Finally back from the abyss :D I have got into Central saint Martins. I am so happy and proud, but again with another school it only means less blog or no blog. And more work, I really need to start putting up some pieces of writing. Time is such a bitch I need more to do stuff. Hey I was wondering does anyone know anything about Surrealism?
:D
I have so much revision at the moment it is annoying, once I have had my exams. I promise to write a review on something extra special.
:D
Hard Candy opens with Candy Shop which is a great opener because it is easy on the ear and it ties in with the theme of Hard Candy, but it doesn't make for that good of a song. Madonna can't resist to sing the recurring and tedious 'my sugar is raw/sticky and sweet'. It is a great attempt at creating a unique type of sound but it doesn't really work, even though by the time you have listened to the album you will be singing Candy Shop word for word. 4 minutes is well self explanatory it is a great song and one that you will be dancing in your underwear to, but very typical. Only on Give It 2 Me do we see Madonna doing what she knows best and that is making great dance music. Give It 2 me will make a great follow up single to the ordinary 4 Minutes.
From now onwards the album only gets better and better with Heartbeat opening in epic fashion with the sound of a heartbeat, sounds ordinary, but you think of anyone else who has done it. Not that many, an if they have it is not as effective, Heartbeat makes for a great mid tempo that will have your mouth salivating for more . An it doesn't disappoint with Miles Aways which is definately going to be a Madonna classic that speak of the an estranged love, that may have you yearning for such a love. This ballad style song is just perfection with Madonna's light airy vocals it really embodies the idea of a distant love. Now what can I say about She's Not Me but that it is a catastrophe. With the lyrics 'she started reading me book/ and stealing my looks' how on earth can this make for a good song. I really can't understand it just makes me cringe.
Well the next song makes up for the disaster of the previous song, Incredible is well pretty much incredible. This songs executions of synths and percussion is just magnificent and when you think it can't get any better, the beat breaks down leaving you in awe of the musical perfection and creativity. The Beat Goes On is slightly dated but it fits in really well, because when looking at the cover of Hard Candy you have this feeling that it is going to be tacky and dated, but in a good way. This is the same about this song and Kanye West rap just doesn't add anything, I have this images of Madonna thinking what could give me credibility, oh put a popular rapper on a song. And again I emphasise that it just sounds tired. Dance 2night is a nice little duet between Madonna and Justin Timberlake that makes you want to dance in a sultry fashion to accompany their lyrics 'you don't have to be rich and famous to be good'. Spanish Lesson is just a classic combination of Spanish music and R'n'B. It opens with the classic sound of a Spanish guitar, but it works and this is definately one Spanish lesson that you will not be missing. The Devil Wouldn't Recognize You is another song that feels like a Madonna classic, it taps into all the elements that create the perfect pop ballad. The albums ends with the epic Voices that is again another classic Madonna song that is so unique you could only think of Madonna singing. The ending of Voices is so epic with the bells and the howling wind it makes for a nice closing track.
Overall this album is a genuine good listen. If you like fun music that has lyrics with some depth to them without the use of cringe worthy metaphors. Then this is surely an album for you. Also this is one of the only albums that uses the title as a theme, just imagine Hard Candy and you have his album, some you like more that others but generally you like them.
The VERDICT 3.5/5
